Dennis and I go back to the 4th grade at Paia Grammar School, then he followed me to SPA (South Papa Ave.).  He reminded me one day that we got our driver's license on the same day with my brother's Valient - stick shift.  After graduation we lost track of each other.  One day after I was discharge from the service, I answered a knock on the door, it was Dennis with his wife - beautiful wife from Guam.  What superised me was how tall he was and that he enlisted in the Marines.  Dennis called me one day from his doctor's off and asked if I had plans for a 2-story residence, he was retiring and wanted to retire to the Phillippines with his wife, I told him I do and will look for them.  Asked him why he was at the doctors, he said just regular check up.  A few days later I get an email from the wife saying Dennis passed...what a sad day that was.  Edddie and I attended his Mass...miss you Dennis.

Ed Todd - August 4th, 2017
So sad to see my dear friend Stephen Ito among those classmates who were on the listing of those who left before us.  Stephen and I spent our early years at Kaunoa Elementary, and were classmates at Baldwin High.  We played trombone in the concert, pep, and marching bands.  He was a good friend, with a good sense of humor.
I lost touch with Stephen after we both attended college (he went to UH and I went to Seattle Pacific Universtity).  On my visits to Maui over the years, I would always visit Stephen's mother in Kahului.  On trips where I would spend time on Maui and Oahu, I would call him.  Stephen was my good friend in those early years.  May he rest in peace.

Was over 52 years ago when we met at the bowling alley in Fort Ord.  We talked about the good times, we laughed about the fun times, and we drank to our friendship, not knowing it would be the last time we'd get together.  You are missed.  Went to Maui couple weeks ago and placed flowers on your grave - hope you like them.  We'll get together again...RIP Alika.

Aloha Alika
It was 50 years ago that we were surfing Hookipa, and most of the time were the only ones out there, along with P.J. Marciel, my neighbor who introduced me to Alika. That bay was ours and we surfed it any chance we had. I often wished that Alika had joined the Navy with me rather than the Army. One thing is for sure, Alika went all out! Rest in peace my brother.

Alika was my cousin, we hung around a lot in grade school, at church, and even sometimes at his house in Naska. I wanted to meet up with him in Vietnam through being drafted, but that never happened for me, however sad enough my aunty came and told us that Alika was comming home in an unusual way. "ANO AI KEALOHA" to cuz Alika and a great big salute for a job well done till we all meet again.

Sheila and her husband used to frequent my hotel (Las Vegas Hilton). The last time I saw her she brought me some lau lau and poi from her restaurant. That was very kind of her to do. We attended school with her during the early years and I've always liked her and got along well with her. The class reunion gave us chance to reunite and talk about all times. She talked to me about her failing health the last time I saw her and couldn't help but notice that she had come back to the hotel for awhile. I will miss seeing her again. Rest in peace Sheila. It was nice knowing you.

I can't believe that Sheila passed away.  My father, Robert Shimabukuro passed in Jan 2008 and the last year of his life he was getting confused and would get lost driving home from around Shiek's.  My mom told me that the owner of Shiek's one day got into my dad's car and drove him home  and my mom couldn't stop laughing when she saw him on the passenger's seat.  My mom passed this year in April.

I cannot remember the last time I saw Peanut but I remember vividly the good times we had during our Kahului School days. He and I hung out a lot and did things like fishing off the pier in Kahului, riding our bikes around Kahului Shopping Center, going to the movies at Kahului Theatre (we saw “The Fly” which scared the ^%* out of us), and his parents picking me up to go the Baldwin football games because Peanut’s brother was the starting center. I don’t know why Peanut did not try out for the BHS football team because he was a good player, at least on the playgrounds. Most people don’t know this, but he got his nickname on day during 4th grade when Alex Kaopuiki said to him, “you’re so small I going call you Peanut”. And he has been “Peanut” ever since. May he rest in peace.
